Dyer started his career at Watford in 1994, before being sold on to Crystal Palace. This transfer made Dyer the first ever teenager in English football to be transferred for at least £1 million. He played in the Premiership and the Football League Division One with Palace for several seasons before moving to Barnsley.
Dyer enjoyed a personally successful five year spell at Barnsley, scoring a total of 69 goals, including a notable double in the 4–1 win over Birmingham City in the 1999–00 play-off semi-final. Barnsley were relegated to the Football League Division Two in 2002, and in 2003 with Barnsley in administration, Dyer joined Watford on a free transfer. He later played 12 games for Stoke City, where he enjoyed a 10-game loan spell at Millwall before transferring to Sheffield United in January 2006.
Having made more than 300 appearances in the Football League and scored more than 100 goals in his career so far, Dyer joined Doncaster Rovers on
2 June 2006 on a free transfer. He had a loan spell with Bradford City in February 2007. He was on the bench for Doncaster Rover's game against Bradford City in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy at the beginning of the 2007–08 season.On
