- Small nucleolar RNA Z13/snr52
Small nucleolar RNA snR52 (homologous to Z13) is a
non-coding RNA (ncRNA) molecule which functions in the modification of othersmall nuclear RNA s (snRNAs). This type of modifiying RNA is usually located in thenucleolus of the eukaryotic cell which is a major site of snRNA biogenesis. It is known as a small nucleolar RNA (snoRNA) and also often referred to as a guide RNA.snoRNA Z13 belongs to the C/D box class of snoRNAs which contain the conserved sequence motifs known as the C box (UGAUGA) and the D box (CUGA). Most of the members of the box C/D family function in directing site-specific 2'-O-methylation of substrate RNAs [cite journal | last = Galardi | first = S | coauthors = Fatica A, Bachi A, Scaloni A, Presutti C, Bozzoni I | year = 2002 | title = Purified box C/D snoRNPs are able to reproduce site-specific 2'-O-methylation of target RNA in vitro | journal = Mol Cell Biol | volume = 22 | pages = 6663–6668 | pmid = 12215523 | doi = 10.1128/MCB.22.19.6663-6668.2002] .snoRNA snR52 was initially discovered using a computational screen of the "Saccharomyces cerevisiae" genomecite journal |author=Lowe TM, Eddy SR |title=A computational screen for methylation guide snoRNAs in yeast |journal=Science |volume=283 |issue=5405 |pages=1168–71 |year=1999 |pmid=10024243 |doi=] , subsequent work identified Z13 in "Schizosaccharomyces pombe". Further experiments have shown that snR52 is transcribed byRNA polymerase III cite journal |author=Harismendy O, Gendrel CG, Soularue P, "et al" |title=Genome-wide location of yeast RNA polymerase III transcription machinery |journal=EMBO J. |volume=22 |issue=18 |pages=4738–47 |year=2003 |pmid=12970186 |doi=10.1093/emboj/cdg466] cite journal |author=Marck C, Kachouri-Lafond R, Lafontaine I, Westhof E, Dujon B, Grosjean H |title=The RNA polymerase III-dependent family of genes in hemiascomycetes: comparative RNomics, decoding strategies, transcription and evolutionary implications |journal=Nucleic Acids Res. |volume=34 |issue=6 |pages=1816–35 |year=2006 |pmid=16600899 |doi=10.1093/nar/gkl085] .References
