The American Association of Individual Investors is a nonprofit organization whose purpose is to educate individual investors regarding stock market portolios, financial planning, and retirement accounts.[cite web|url=http://www.aaii.com/aboutaaii/|title=About AAII|author=James Cloonan, PhD|source=AAII Website] ]The organization was founded by Dr. James Cloonan, Ph.D. in 1978. Over the last thirty years, the organization has grown to a membership of approximately 150,000 and consistently reports higher average investment returns than the S&P 500. According to Cloonan, "AAII's purpose is to assist individuals in becoming effective managers of their own assets through programs of education, information and research."
