footnotes =Erich Hecke (
September 20 ,1887 –February 13 ,1947 ) was a Germanmathematician . He obtained his PhD in Göttingen under the supervision ofDavid Hilbert .Kurt Reidemeister andHeinrich Behnke were among his students.Hecke was born in
Buk , Posen,Germany (nowPoznań ,Poland ), and died inCopenhagen ,Denmark . His early work included establishing the functional equation for theDedekind zeta function , with a proof based ontheta function s. The method extended to theL-function s associated to a class of characters now known asHecke character s oridele class character s: such L-functions are now known asHecke L-function s. He devoted most of his research to the theory ofmodular form s, creating the general theory ofcusp form s (holomorphic , for "GL"(2)), as it is now understood in the classical setting.ee also
