In
arthropod andvertebrate anatomy , the vertex (or "cranial vertex") refers to the upper surface of the head.In humans, the vertex is formed by four bones of the
skull : thefrontal bone , the twoparietal bone s, and theoccipital bone . These bones are connected by thecoronal suture between the frontal and parietal bones, thesagittal suture between the two parietal bones, and thelambdoid suture between the parietal and occipital bones. "Vertex baldness" refers to a form ofmale pattern baldness in which the baldness is limited to the vertex, resembling atonsure . Inchildbirth , "vertex birth" refers to the common head-first presentation of the baby, as opposed to the buttocks-first position of abreech birth .In
