Rupert Goold (b. 1972) is an English theatre director, and current artistic director of Headlong Theatre, previously known as the Oxford Stage Company.

Biography

Early years

Goold studied at Trinity College, Cambridge and was trainee director at Donmar Warehouse for the 1995 season.

Career

Goold was artistic director of the Royal and Derngate Theatres in Northampton from 2000 to 2005. Prior to that, he was an associate at the Salisbury Playhouse in 1996-97. In addition to his work as a director he has co-authored three adaptions for the stage.

Goold directed Patrick Stewart, as Prospero in the Royal Shakespeare Company production of "The Tempest" in 2006, and as Macbeth in his acclaimed Minerva studio staging of "Macbeth" at the Chichester Festival Theatre in May 2007 [ [http://www.telegraph.co.uk/arts/main.jhtml?xml=/arts/2007/07/16/btpatrick116.xml 'Shakespeare is coursing through me' - Telegraph ] ] . In September 2007 "Macbeth" transferred to the Gielgud Theatre in London and then to the Brooklyn Academy of Music, New York. It is currently showing at the Lyceum Theater on Broadway. At the "Evening Standard Theatre Awards" 2007 "Macbeth" won two awards: Stewart won the Best Actor Award , while Goold won "The Sydney Edwards Award" for Best Director. Besides his work with Headlong, Goold also directed Jessica Lange in a 2007 West End revival of Tennessee Williams' "The Glass Menagerie" at the Apollo Theatre, London [ [http://www.thestage.co.uk/reviews/review.php/15945/the-glass-menagerie The Stage / Reviews / The Glass Menagerie ] ] . In early 2008, he directed the original West End premiere of Stephen Adly Guirgis's "The Last Days of Judas Iscariot".

Later this year, he will direct the West End revival of "Oliver!" - currently being cast through the BBC television production "I'd Do Anything" - at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane.

He is also shortly due to direct Pete Postlethwaite in an eagerly-awaited production of King Lear at Liverpool's resurgent Everyman Theatre.

His opera credits include productions at Batignano and Garsington.

Personal life

Goold is married to British actress Kate Fleetwood with whom he has one child.
