Tommy D'Achino

Tommy D'Achino (born May 5, 1959 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania), was an American boxer who had a short but impressive undefeated career, that was cut short due to a shoulder injury.

Career

As an amateur at the age of 16, Dachino was a mere 5'11 160 pounds, considered lanky by many, but proved nevertheless to be a powerful hitter with either hand. Starting out, he fought mainly in Golden Glove contests around the Tri-State area. He was considered one of the top young local Middleweight prospects at 17, continuing to fight in that division for another before finally growing into the Heavyweight class. Grooming himself into an impressive 6'1 220 pounds, Dachino was no longer considered lanky, but rather stocky.

Dachino proved to be an extremely effective heavyweight, with a feared left hand, and had powered his way up to an undefeated record, and at the age of only 20, had the opportunity to fight at the Trump Plaza in Atlantic City New Jersey in the summer of 1982, in his highest profile fight yet, against Marvis Reid, a formidable opponent with an impressive record in his own right.

However, an attack by members of a South Philadelphia based Organized Crime organization, wielding baseball bats, left Dachino with broken ribs and a broken shoulder just a week before the fight. The injury would not only keep him from his Trump Plaza debut, but from ever boxing again all together.
