Predecessors
As to dedicated stations for dance music in Chicago, Dance Factory has an immediate predecessor: Energy92.7&5. Energy92.7&5 aired dance music 24/7 round-the-clock in Chicago and northern Illinois from 2001 to 2003 On 92.5 WDEK in Dekalb, 92.7 WKIE in Arlington Hts., and 92.7 WKIF in Kankakee, Illinois. At the time, Energy92.7&5 was very popular with its target radio audience, even producing two consecutive CD-song collections, "Energy92.7&5 Dance Hits Volume(s) 1 & 2", for retail sale. In 2003, however, financial difficulties by Energy's parent company forced the station off the air.
Said NineFM's program director Matt DuBiel: "Ever since 'Energy FM' left the Chicago airwaves a few years ago, there has been a void on the radio dial, and Chris has been fighting to get the music back on the air. 9FM" is "glad to" be "able to fill that void while still being able to play all the other great songs from our music library" (sic).
