Romanian passport

Romanian passport

The Romanian Passport gives its bearer the right to exit and enter the country through any of the border passing points, opened to the international traveler traffic. Outside Romania, the passport gives the bearer the right to assistance and protection provided by the diplomatic missions and consular offices of Romania. The passport is the property of the Romanian state.

The Romanian passport is the official travel document issued by the Romanian Ministry of Interior and Administrative Reform, through the Community Public Service for Issuing and Evidence of the Simple Passports ("Serviciul Public Comunitar pentru Eliberarea şi Evidenţa Paşapoartelor Simple"), to Romanian citizens that do not have the right to travel outside Romania suspended.

The simple passports are kept by the bearers, that are not allowed to hand it to unauthorized persons and/or authorities (foreign diplomatic missions or consular offices).

Romanian travelers will experience an increase in Visa Free and Visa on Arrival privileges over time as more years pass with Romania being in the European Union.

Romania is due to begin issuing its biometric passport as of January 1 2009.

Physical Appearance

Regular Romanian EU passports are burgundy red in color, with the Romania Coat of Arms emblazoned in the center of the front cover. The words "Romania", and "passport" are inscribed above and below the coat of arms (in Romanian, without diacritics). The information page identifying the bearer and the issuing authority is on the first page, not numbered (the Romanian passport contains 32 pages, information written on the 32nd page of the passport). On the last page, the bearer fills in information regarding contact person (persons) in case of emergency. On the third cover (the inner back cover) there are instructions for the bearer how to use and how not to use the passport.

It should be noted that the carte de identitate can now be used to travel within the European Union.
