"That Was Then... This Is Now" is a 1985 film of an S.E. Hinton book. It starred Emilio Estevez, who also wrote the screenplay, and Craig Sheffer in the main roles. It was distributed by Paramount Pictures.

Plot

Mark Jennings' (Emilio Estevez) only link to society is the attachment he feels towards an older brother-figure. When Bryon Douglas (Craig Sheffer) starts spending time with a new girlfriend (Kim Delaney), Mark begins to feel even more alienated, and gets involved with drugs and the police.

*The movie "That Was Then... This Is Now" takes place in Minneapolis and Saint Paul, Minnesota. The S.E. Hinton novel is set in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
*This is the only film adaption of an S.E. Hinton book that does not star Matt Dillon.
*This is the third adaption of an S.E. Hinton novel that features Emilio Estevez. He played Johnny Collins in "Tex" and Two-Bit Matthews in "The Outsiders", which were supporting characters in those other books. Emilio's character in "That Was Then...This is Now" is one of the main characters.
*According to her website, this is the only film adaption of her book that author S.E. Hinton was not directly involved in.
*Unlike "The Outsiders" it was set in the present day at the time of filming(1980s), rather than when the book was set, even though the characters from both books know each other.
