King of Wales

King of Wales

King of Wales was a rarely achieved title, much rarer than King of Scotland, as Wales was never as unified as Scotland. A more common title, but with different meaning, was King of the Britons. So-called or self-proclaimed kings of Wales were typically the king of the most dominant minor Welsh kingdom of the time. Because Wales does not survive as an independent kingdom, no canonical list of kings exists.

There is much debate about which kings have any claim to the title. For instance, according to Richard John King in the "Handbook to the Cathedrals of Wales", Gruffudd ap Cynan was the last sovereign known by the title of King of Wales, ignoring claimes for Owain Gwynedd and Rhys ap Gruffydd [http://books.google.com/books?id=MhxNAAAAMAAJ&pg=RA1-PA315&dq=%22king+of+wales%22&ei=GcDCSLLnBILmygSE49n-Ag#PRA1-PA315,M1] .
