USS "Usage" (AM-130) was an "Auk"-class minesweeper acquired by the
U.S. Navy for the dangerous task of removing mines from minefields laid in the water to prevent ships from passing."Usage" was laid down on
1 January 1942 atChickasaw, Alabama , by theGulf Shipbuilding Corp.; launched on4 October 1942 ; and transferred to theUnited Kingdom underlend-lease on7 June 1943 .Lend-lease transfer to U.K.
"Usage", an
Auk class minesweeper, served with theRoyal Navy as "Tourmaline" in theAtlantic Ocean inWorld War II . She was returned toUnited States custody in January1947 , struck from theNavy list , and transferred to theForeign Liquidation Commission for disposition. Sold toTurkey , she served with theTurkish Navy under the name "Cardak" until1974 .References
