Originally, it was only heard on
BBC Radio Newcastle ,BBC Radio Cleveland ,BBC Radio York ,BBC Radio Leeds ,BBC Radio Sheffield andBBC Radio Humberside , these being the stations in Yorkshire and the North East, launching in May 1989 and broadcasting seven nights a week between 6:00 p.m. and midnight. Any local programming broadcast after 6:00 p.m., such as programmes for ethnic minorities, were consigned to Medium Wave so the Night Network could broadcast on FM. Prior to this, the four Yorkshire stations had shared specialist music programmes since August 1986, broadacsting them initially on weeknights between 6:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. and then latterly six nights per week between 7:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. apart from Tuesday to allow for local sports coverage. The Night Network was eventually extented in 1991 to include the North West stations ofBBC Radio Merseyside ,BBC Radio Lancashire ,BBC Radio Cumbria andBBC Radio Manchester as it was then. The broadcast hours were changed to 7:00 p.m. to midnight with a format of specialist music between 7:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. and Bob Roberts hosting the late show from LancasterFact|date=November 2007 starting after the 10:00 p.m. news. The programme was extended to 12:30 a.m. in the following year and eventually to 1:00 a.m.News
Each Region opted-out for the news, there would be three bulletins broadcast lasting exactly five minutes long, one for Yorkshire and Humberside, one for the North East and one for the North West.

Jones TM . The original package was just for the Yorkshire and the North-East, a second package was produced for the rest of the network.Presenters
