BBC Local Radio service for the English areas ofTeesside ,County Durham and some ofNorth Yorkshire . It was known as BBC Radio Cleveland until Saturday, 11th August, 2007.History
The station was originally launched as 'Radio Teesside' at 6 pm on 31 December when Teesside Tonight, a local news programme was presented by George Lambelle 1970, it now broadcasts from its studios in
Middlesbrough on 95.0 (Bilsdale West Moor), 95.8 (Whitby )FM and DAB.It became known as Radio Cleveland on 1 April 1974, when the county of Cleveland was formed, and moved to new offices in 1983. On April 1, 1996, the county of Cleveland split into Stockton-on-Tees, Hartlepool, Middlesbrough, and
Redcar and Cleveland . These four boroughs along with nearby Darlington now form the governmental "sub-region" ofTees Valley . Also included in the main listening area is the Army's main garrison atCatterick Garrison , which is also included in the transmission area of Radio York on 104.3FM. The station recently rebranded itself as BBC Tees, a brand already associated with its 'Where I Live' website and 'BBC Bus', due to its broadcasting area no longer being associated with the name Cleveland. You can now visit the BBC Open Centre where BBC Tees is housed and enjoy live music performances, photography and art exhibitions and participate in live broadcasts. Tours of the newly refurbished radiostudio s take place each week and can be booked online [http://www.bbc.co.uk/tees/opencentre BBC Tees.]Transmitters
The signal on 95FM is relatively strong and comes from the 900ft Bilsdale transmitter on the
North York Moors , which transmits the main television signals forTeesside andNorth Yorkshire , and national radio frequencies, as well as the commercial stationsTFM Radio on 96.6FM,100-102 Century FM on 100.7FM andGalaxy 105-106 on 106.4FM. Radio Cleveland has greater coverage than these independent stationsFact|date=January 2008, and reaches as far south asDoncaster and the north parts ofLincolnshire and interferes with Radio Lincolnshire on 94.9FM. The Whitby transmitter also has television, national radio, and the independent stationYorkshire Coast Radio on 103.1FM. Whitby is actually inNorth Yorkshire . Radio York's coastal transmitter is at Scarborough. The DAB signals come from theEMAP Teeside 11B multiplex atEston Nab (near theA174 road ) and Brusselton (nearShildon between the A68 and A6072).You can also get the station in the Teesside, County Durham & North Yorkshire area if you have a DAB radio.
