CCGS "Henry Larsen" is a
Canadian Coast Guard icebreaker based inSt John's, Newfoundland .A "Medium Gulf/River icebreaker", the vessel is named after
Henry Larsen , the commander of theRoyal Canadian Mounted Police patrol vessel "St. Roch " which was the first vessel to traverse theNorthwest Passage in a single season.The Canadian Coast Guard has two vessels in their "Heavy icebreaker" class, and four in the "Medium Gulf/River icebreaker" class. These are their only vessels capable of year-round operation in the high Arctic. These vessels all have a helicopter hangar and can carry and maintain a "BO-105" helicopter, which is used for logistical purposes, as well as ice-spotting, and search and rescue.
A 2004 voyage of this vessel is the subject of the documentary film "Ice Breaker".
