Patrick Carlin , VC (
1832 -May 11 ,1895 ) ofBelfast ,County Antrim , was an Irish recipient of theVictoria Cross , the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces.VC action
When Carlin was approximately 26 years old, he served as a private in the 1st Battalion, 13th Regiment of the
British Army , later known as theThe Somerset Light Infantry (Prince Albert's) , during the Indian rebellion (1857-1858). On April 6, 1858 atAzumgurh ,India , Private Carlin rescued a wounded naik of the 4th Madras Rifles from the field of battle. While he was carrying his wounded comrade on his shoulders, he was fired on by a mutineeringsepoy , who he fought and killed with the sword of the soldier he was rescuing.Further Information
He died in the Belfast Union Infirmary
11 May 1895 , and was buried in the old workhouse Abrington Street graveyard onDonegall Road ,Belfast ; he has no memorial. His Victoria Cross is displayed at TheSomerset Light Infantry Museum "(Taunton, Somerset , England)".References
