He was about 34 years old, and a private in the
78th Regiment of Foot (laterThe Seaforth Highlanders (Ross-shire Buffs, Duke of Albany's) ),British Army during theIndian rebellion of 1857 when the following deed took place for which he was awarded the VC.On
26 September 1857 atLucknow ,India , Private Hollowell was one of a party which was shut up and besieged in one of the houses. He behaved throughout the day in a most admirable manner, encouraging the other nine men, who were in low spirits, to keep going. During the siege the house caught on fire and shot were fired through the window.He later achieved the rank of
Lance-Corporal .His Victoria Cross is displayed at the
