Chersonesos

Chersonesos or Chersonesus is the Greek for "peninsula".

The term appears in various ancient toponyms:

  • Chersonesos Taurica an ancient city near Sevastopol, current archaeological site in the Crimea, Ukraine. The name Chersonesus Taurica was also extended to the entire Crimean Peninsula.
  • Kherson, Ukraine, formerly called Chersonesos.
  • Chersonesos (Lyctus), an ancient Greek city on Crete that was the harbor of Lyctus.
  • Chersonissos, Crete, Greece, a village near the historical harbor of Lyctus.
  • Chersonesos (Sicily), an ancient Greek colony in Sicily, Italy.
  • Gallipoli, Turkey, was called Chersonesus Thracica in antiquity.
  • Jutland Peninsula, Denmark, was called Chersonesus Cimbrica in antiquity.
  • Malay Peninsula, Malaysia, was called Chersonesus Aurea in antiquity.
