The North-South Institute

The North-South Institute (NSI) is a Canadian research institute focused on international development.

The Institute's website says that it is "dedicated to eradicating global poverty and enhancing social justice through research which promotes international cooperation, democratic governance, and conflict prevention." It provides research and analysis on foreign policy and international development issues, which it makes available to policy-makers, educators, business, the media and the general public.

The North-South Institute was founded in 1976 and is based in Ottawa, Canada. Parts of its research is funded by the Canadian government[1]

Communications and Publications

The Institute promotes public discussion by publishing and promoting research results, as well as by hosting and participating in seminars, workshops and conferences on leading development topics. NSI also provides information to the media and general public on a broad range of international issues.

NSI’s publication tools include books, briefing papers, conference reports, speeches and a biannual, bilingual magazine - Review/Revue.

The Canadian Development Report is The North-South Institute’s flagship annual publication. The CDR, which is published annually, includes topical essays on international development as well as a comprehensive statistical annex which provides a road-map of Canada’s relations with developing countries. Previous editions are available online.

The NSI also distributes press releases, event advisories, presentations, electronic books, and audio files through its website. A catalogue of publications is available online www.nsi-ins.ca.

Since 1994, NSI has been a member of the Halifax Initiative, a coalition of Canadian non-governmental organizations for public interest work and education on international financial institutions.
