William Stephen, sometimes William Stephani [probably Stephenson] , was a medieval
prelate based inScotland , who becameBishop of Orkney and thenBishop of Dunblane . Areader indivinity at theUniversity of St Andrews at its first establishment, he was provided byAvignon Pope Benedict XIII asBishop of Orkney November 15 1415 . He was a canon of Moray at this date. The consecration took place at thePapal court .Despite having his provision confirmed by
Pope Martin V onJuly 15 1519 , he does not seem to have gotten possession of fruits by the time he was translated to thebishopric of Dunblane onOctober 30 1419 . He was elected asconservator of theprovincial synod of the Scottish church held at Perth onJuly 16 1420 . OnOctober 28 1420 he witnessed ascharter ofMurdoch Stewart, Duke of Albany . He was an auditor and receiver of theransom of KingJames I of Scotland in 1424. He was sent as an ambassador toRome by the king in 1425.He is last attested in 1428, and he died sometime before
February 25 1429 . The next bishop of Dunblane wasMichael de Ochiltree .References
