"90 Millas" ("90 Miles"), released in September 2007, is the eleventh studio solo album and fourth Spanish album released by Cuban-American singer Gloria Estefan. It is the artist's twenty-ninth album overall.

Album history

The album's world-wide release occurred on September 17, 2007. The release included Spain but did not include the United States and Japan, where it was released September 18, 2007. The European version and the Limited Edition Package have two bonus tracks "Vueltas Da la Vida" and "No Llores (Featuring Wisin Y Yandel)", and the Japanese release features "Vueltas Da la Vida" and "Al Verte Partir", a track exclusive to this version.

The album, with 14 brand new tracks, is a tribute to the music of her native Cuba. The first single, "No Llores," features a collaboration between Carlos Santana, Jose Feliciano, and Sheila E.. Estefan had mentioned Santana and Feliciano as pioneers of Latin music in the 60's and 70's, and that having them collaborate with her on "No Llores" is "a thrill and a privilege." This song includes a lot of Latin-Rhythms and it can be described as a modernization on a typical Cuban danzon. The single was released at American radio-stations on June 18, 2007, while the single was released digitally on iTunes that Tuesday June 19,2007. The single in its physical format was scheduled for Europe only release on August 23, 2007, a week before the CD's release, but at last time, the release was cancelled. This single was released as a promotional single only to the United States, meanwhile at Europe was released the single "Píntame De Colores", this last single was released later at the States in February 2008.

The inclusion of Carlos Santana as one of the artists contributing to "90 Millas" stirred a controversy among a tiny minority of the Cuban exile community in the U.S., who alleged Mr. Santana was sympathetic to the Fidel Castro regime and Che Guevara because he had worn a t-shirt featuring Guevara's image created by Jim Fitzpatrick.Fact|date=August 2007

Emilio and Estefan issued a joint statement at the end of March, 2007, addressing the controversy:

: "For the past 32 years of our career our position against the Castro regime has been crystal clear . . . we have expressed our disagreement with the Cuban dictatorship and have spoken worldwide of the pain of the Cuban people. We have never nor would we ever collaborate with anyone who supports the Cuban dictatorship or Che Guevara. This should be apparently clear due to our trajectory."Fact|date=August 2007

For the end of the year, "90 Millas" made it onto the "Billboard Year-End Charts" at the "Billboard" Top Latin Albums at #28 and at the Top Tropical Albums at #4. And thanks to the album, Estefan made onto the America Top 100 charts as the 11th Latin Female Artist of The Year [ [http://www.americatop100.com/2007/artistalf.html AmericaTop100.com - Las Listas Oficiales del Continente Americano ] ] .

On April, 2008 Estefan was the winner of two Billboard Latin Music Awards beating other artists such as Olga Tañon and Fanny Lu in the race for the "Tropical Album Of The Year — Female" and "Tropical Airplay Song Of The Year" for "No Llores".

For the Latin Grammy Awards of 2008 ceremony, Estefan received a lot of nominations on September 2008. Firstly, Gloria was selected as the "Persona Del Año" ("Person of the Year"), the first time this awards is given to a female artist. Secondly, Estefan received three nominations for her effort on this album, receiving the nod for "Best Traditional Tropical Album", a nomination for the song "Píntame De Colores" as the "Best Tropical Song" and finally a nomination for "Best Long Form Music Video" for her documentary included on the album.

Promotion

In order to promote the album, Estefan began a short international promo tour in September, she performed first at the bullring Las Ventas in Madrid, Spain on September 15, 2007. Gloria also appeared in Rotterdam, The Netherlands on September 8, 2007. Her performance included new songs, along with a collection of old hits. The performance was free and open to members of the public, and was part of the "Wereld Havens Dagen" (World Harbour Days), commemorating the 75th Anniversary of the Port of Rotterdam.Fact|date=September 2007

A point of promotion for the album was a special album signing date at a Starbucks in the Bronx, New York. Another venue of the promo-tour was a special concert at the Beacon Theater in Manhattan. She was also set to appear on the show "Dancing With the Stars", performing some songs from her new album, but due her mother's critical health status, she canceled the performance to attend to her mother in Miami. A week after, she performed at the show singing "A Bailar" and her memorable and famous "Conga".

On May 1, 2008, Estefan said to a Latin newspaper that she would begin a tour in September 2008 in Spain to promoter her last effort, this tour is planned to promote the album only at the European continent [ [http://www.lavanguardia.es/lv24h/20080502/53460296996.html Gloria Estefan volverá a España con una nueva gira ] ] . Estefan however didn't gave any place or any date for the tour, not even saying in what city is going to start the tour, the only known to date, is that it would start at Spain.

Estefan also made another appearance at the opening of the MGM Grand Hotel & Casino new venue, Foxwoods Resort Casino, for three days including one at Memorial Day in the United States and then she performed at the Casino Rama, in Canada ending with her promotional tour to pass to the European world tour.

Some tracks mentioned to be on the album, but changed were: "No Voy a Trabajar" (I'm Not Going to Work), "Tratare de Olvidarte" (I'll Try to Forget You) and "Vueltas Da La Vida". But later "Vueltas Da La Vida" has been confirmed by Sony BMG Japan as being a bonus track on the Japanese version of the album along with a new song titled "Al Verte Partir".

Also, some names were changed: "Píntame de Colores" was changed to just "Píntame", as "Esperando (Cuando Cuba Sea Libre)" was changed simply for "Esperando".

Trivia

* The album is named "90 Millas" because that is the distance in miles between the island of Cuba and Key West.
* It's her fourth Spanish album outside of the original Miami Sound Machine. The other three are: "Mi Tierra", "Abriendo Puertas" and "Alma Caribeña".
* In an interview held in New York, Gloria mentioned that she felt Celia Cruz's spirit and presence while recording the songs for the record. Gloria lamented Celia's death as having her be a part of 90 Millas would have been very special to both of them.
* Of all the Latin albums of Gloria, this one it has been the most successful in the U.S. "Billboard" Top 200, this one peaked at number twenty-five, the others: "Mi Tierra" (#27), "Abriendo Puertas" (#67) and "Alma Caribeña" (#50).

Chart performance

The album was released in the U.S. on September 18, 2007. It debuted on iTunes Top Albums at number eighty-four and has peaked so far at number sixty-five. On the U.S. Billboard 200 chart, the album debuted at number 25, selling about 23,000 copies in its first week. The album was incredibly successful in the Netherlands, where debuted at number 1. It became Estefan's first album to top the charts in Holland since 1988 with her "Anything For You" album. Estefan also broke records, because "90 Millas" is the first Spanish language album to be featured at the number-one spot on Dutch charts, and it was the highest debut of the week. The album was also successful in Switzerland where it debuted at number four.
