"Zoo in Budapest" is a 1933 film directed by Rowland V. Lee and starring Loretta Young, Gene Raymond, O.P. Heggie and Paul Fix.

Plot

Flamboyant Zani is a kindly young man who grew up and works in the zoo in Budapest, where he has spent his entire life. His only true friends are the zoo's animals, and indeed has been chastised by his boss for being too nice to them. He loves the animals so much that he steals animal furs from the women who wear them. After stealing a wealthy woman's fur coat, he becomes a fugitive. While hiding out, Zani meets Eve, a young and beautiful orphan girl, who is on a school group visit to the zoo, and they fall in love. For them to be together Eve must somehow escape from her strict orphan school, and Zani coaxes her to escape her caretakers. Eve is only too happy to run away, since she is faced with the prospect of being forced to work as an indentured servant (more like a slave) until she grows up. Zani and Eve then must hide overnight in the zoo. Dr. Grunbaum, the zoo director, is forced to organize a search party to capture both Zani and Eve. Zani proves too elusive and harbors Eve in a bear cave. However, when evil zookeeper Heinie discovers them, he draws the authorities' attention to their hideout. Zani saves Eve from an attack by the vicious Heinie. More scuffles ensue and they result in many dangerous animals being freed from their cages. The errant zookeeper later redeems himself by saving a young child from a hungry tiger.
