Johnnie Barnes Johnny Barnes born John James Adolphus Mills in 1924,is a Bermudian native found waving to passing traffic at the Foot of the Lane roundabout in Hamilton,Bermuda from roughly 3:45 am to 10 am. Regarded as a Bermudian institution himself, rain or shine, he is known to say "I love you, I love you," to passing commuters during the morning rush hour into Hamilton.He was an electrician by trade and worked on the Bermuda Railroad as an electrician until the railroad closed in 1948. He then drove a bus for a living.
One day, on the way to work, he stopped at the Crow Lane roundabout took up waving to traffic. Barnes who is sometimes called "the friendliest man in Bermuda" legally changed his name in 1997. There is currently a statue of him adjacent to the roundabout. He has become something of a tourist attraction himself, having been profiled in most guidebooks to the island.
Johnny Barnes can be found at the Crow Lane roundabout from 3:45am to 10:00am everyday Monday through Friday. (approximately 1 mile due East of downtown Hamilton) Latitude 32.2932° Longitude -64.7697°
Johnny is quick to greet anyone approaching the Crow Lane roundabout (According to Johhny, he was married in 1949 and is still married. His wife has a cheery disposition because he (Johnny) has "covered her with honey" since they were married.
Often he will be accompanied by people, occasionally costumed, who are promoting some charity, promoting a social cause or sometimes commercial advertising
