Guild (ecology)

Guilds are groups of species that exploit the same resources in the same way [ [http://www.britannica.com/eb/article-70591/community-ecology Encyclopaedia Britannica article on guilds] ] , therefore sharing a similar ecological niche.

Some example guilds: forbs, geophytes, graminoids, shrubs, trees and vines.

They are classified according to how they acquire their nutrients, their state of mobility, and their mode of feeding.

The number of guilds occupied by an ecosystem is termed its "disparity".
