USS "Motive" (AM-102) was an "Auk"-class minesweeper acquired by the
U.S. Navy for the dangerous task of removing mines from minefields laid in the water to prevent ships from passing."Motive" was named after the word “motive,” which is defined as any idea, desire, need, or emotion that prompts a person to act. "Motive" was laid down
14 April 1942 by theGeneral Engineering & Dry Dock Co.,Alameda, California ; launched17 August 1942 ; and commissioned17 April 1943 , Lt. Comdr. Joseph G. Enzensperger, Jr.,USNR , in command.World War II North Pacific operations
After shakedown, "Motive" got underway from
San Francisco, California ,5 June 1943 and arrivedDutch Harbor ,Unalaska Island ,14 June . She made one round trip back toAlameda, California as aconvoy escort from26 June to14 August "Motive" then operated continuously in theAleutian Islands for the next 4 months as convoy escort andantisubmarine patrol. On13 October , while anchored inMassacre Bay ,Attu Island , "Motive" was attacked by about 10 Japanese planes making a fast high level attack. She received six near misses from 100 pound bombs but no damage, and drove the enemy planes off with gunfire.World War II South Pacific operations
"Motive" sailed for
Pearl Harbor 1 December , and on22 January 1944 sailed forKwajalein , where she conductedminesweeping andantisubmarine operations until14 February , when she departed for Pearl Harbor and repairs inCalifornia . Returning to Pearl Harbor22 May , she joined TF 52 for the capture ofSaipan , whose assault began15 June . "Motive", in TG 52.9, the demonstration group, participated in the dawn feint on the beaches north ofTanapag town, while the actual landings were taking place atCharan Kanoa . On patrol asantisubmarine and screening vessel, "Motive" fired on Japanese aircraft 16, 17, and18 June , and was strafed by a Zero17 June , receiving a number of hits which were quickly repaired. "Motive" leftSaipan forEniwetok 24 June , returning9 July . She then conducted sweeping operations off the east coast ofSaipan and undertookantisubmarine patrols. From24 July until November "Motive" served as aconvoy escort,antisubmarine patrol and screening ship, operating out ofSaipan ,Eniwetok ,Guam , andUlithi . While atUlithi with aconvoy on20 November , "Motive" observed the torpedoing of Mississinewa, (AO-59) which broke into flame. The convoy got underway forGuam without further incident. For the next 5 months "Motive" served onconvoy escortantisubmarine , and screening patrols andhydrographic surveys out ofPeleliu ,Palaus ;Guam ;Eniwetok ;Saipan ; andIwo Jima .West Coast overhaul
On
25 April 1945 "Motive" headed back for the west coast, touching atPearl Harbor andSan Francisco, California , before arriving24 May atSeattle, Washington , for overhaul.Post-World War II operations
As the war in the Pacific ended, "Motive" left
Seattle, Washington ,4 September for Sasebo,Japan , arriving20 October . From28 October to25 November she swept for mines in theEast China Sea , locating and destroying a total of 31. On28 November "Motive" moored inKeelung Harbor,Kurun ,Taiwan , and on7 December went intodrydock atShanghai . She returned to Sasebo21 December .Decommissioning
"Motive" departed Sasebo,
Japan , on1 January 1946 for theU.S. West Coast , and was decommissioned and placed in reserve atSan Diego, California ,15 June 1946 . Redesignated MSF-102 on7 February 1955 , "Motive" was struck from theNaval Register 1 December 1966 . She was destroyed as a target by the Pacific Fleet.Awards
