Born in Cazenovia, New York, Sidney Edgerton attended country schools and an academy in Lima, New York where he was later an instructor. He moved to
Ohio in 1844 and taught in an academy inTallmadge, Ohio the same year. He studied law, graduated from the Cincinnati Law School in 1845 and was admitted to the bar, commencing practice inAkron, Ohio in 1846. He married Mary Wright (1827–1885) onMay 18 ,1848 with whom he would have nine children.He was a delegate to the convention that formed the
Free Soil Party in 1848, served as prosecuting attorney ofSummit County, Ohio from 1852 to 1856 and was a delegate to the first Republican National Convention in 1856. Edgerton was elected a Republican to theUnited States House of Representatives in 1858, serving from 1859 to 1863, not being a candidate for renomination in 1862.During the Civil War, Edgerton served in the
Union Army ascolonel of the Squirrel Hunters. He was later appointed a federal judge for the Territory of Idaho in 1863 and served as the first Territorial Governor of Montana from 1864 to 1865.Afterwards, Edgerton returned to
Akron, Ohio and continued practicing law until his death there onJuly 19 ,1900 . He was interned in Tallmadge Cemetery inTallmadge, Ohio .External links
