Located 12 km from Ranchi, the capital of Jharkhand, India is one of the oldest schools in the eastern region of India. Situated in a plush green environment Bishop Westcott Boys' School (BWBS) is located on the banks of Subarnarekha River in Namkum block.

This all boys school was founded in the year 1927 by Rev. Foss Westcott. The magnificent school building also served as a make shift hospital during the World War II.

BWBS is affiliated to ICSE board of curriculum and has the legacy of producing exceptional talents for the country. The profile of students is a mix of boarders (hostlers) and day scholars. The boarding facility of the school makes it a unique melting pot for students from all walks of life. Students from Nepal, Bangladesh and Burma add to the cultural diversity. The school has a sizable student representations from the Chinese origin. These Chinese families are settled in Kolkatta and citizens of India.

The school also boasts of a well developed sporting facility. Participation in sporting events are encouraged through dedicated sports hours for the boarding students. The school has facilities for Football, Cricket, Volleyball, Basketball, Tennis, Table Tennis and recently added Horse Riding. BWBS has a rich legacy in track and field events and their annual sports meet is talked about event in the region. The school has produced few fine athletes in the region.

Mr. Richard Ion Thornton is the current principal of the school. An Anglo-Indian Mr. Thornton has his pedigree from UK and Kolkatta.

The girls counterpart of the boys' school is Bishop Westcott Girls' School. The school has one of the best faculties for school education.

History

The Bishop Westcott Boys' School was founded by the Right Rev. Dr. Foss Westcott, Bishop of Chotanagpur in 1927. The school is run by a managing committee formed by the governing body, which comprises eminent educators and citizens.

The school has little over 8000 students at present of which 3800 are boarders. The School is affiliated to the Council for Indian School Certificate Examination, New Delhi for class 10 and class 12 (Science and Commerce). Plus two section is Co-educational (Boarding facility is available for boys only).

Location

The school is situated in Namkum, a place 6 km east of Ranchi, on the banks of the famous Subarnarekha River. It is located just near the Namkum Railway station. The boys' school and the girls' school were within a single campus but were separated after an Army Hospital was built in between.

It originally consisted of a C shaped building and other buildings were erected later.It now consists of an office building, the same old C shaped building, a building that has the Library and the Laboratory, an auditorium, a juniors hostel, sick room, servants' quarter, staffs' residence, principal's bungalow and playgrounds. A building has been added recently that has the Hostels.
