Production Workshop (Brown University)

Production Workshop (Brown University)

Production Workshop (PW) is a student-run theater group at Brown University. It produces 7 full productions each year which are directed, designed, and performed by mostly undergraduate students. It receives its funding from the Undergraduate Finance Board.

Theater Spaces

PW controls two theater spaces located in T.F. Green Hall: the Upstairs Space and the Downstairs Space. The Upstairs Space is a small black box theater with small but effective lighting and sound systems. It can be reserved free of charge by any student for any activity or performance, and often hosts events such as plays, concerts, staged readings, and electronic music installations.

The Downstairs Space, PW's main theater space, is a 35'x55' black box theater with 96 dimmers and an up-to-date sound system. In this space, PW produces 3 plays in the fall semester and 4 plays in the spring semester. Additionally, [http://mf.students.brown.edu/ Musical Forum] produces one show each semester in this space.

lot System

Productions in the Downstairs Space are decided on a per-slot basis. There are three slots in the fall semester and 4 slots in the spring semester, one taking place over Commencement. If a student wishes to direct a show, he or she proposes to a specific slot by writing a proposal including his or her thoughts on the show as well as a list of any staff members already signed on. A typical slot is decided 3 weeks before the start of rehearsals, and then has 4 weeks in the space including a week of tech and performances.

Leadership and Meetings

PW is managed by a board typically consisting of between 10-18 students. New board members are accepted each semester and typically stay on the board for the rest of their undergraduate careers.

The board holds open meetings every Sunday in which current shows are discussed, along with the day to day issues of running a working theater. In addition to the board, the production managers for any shows currently in rehearsal or performance are required to attend the weekly meeting.
