John Appold

John George Appold, FRS [ [http://www.biocrawler.com/encyclopedia/Biocrawler:Fellows_of_the_Royal_Society/A Fellows of the Royal Society] ] (born on 14 April 1800; died on 31 August 1865), fur dyer and engineer, was a pioneer of the centrifugal pump: he introduced the curved vane, which he demonstrated at the Great Exhibition at the Crystal Palace in 1851 [ [http://www.fortunecity.com/meltingpot/broadway/1211/id20.htm Centrifugal impeller] ] .

His design for a braking mechanism for laying ocean telegraph cables was incorporated in the first Transatlantic cable laid in 1857.He is commemorated with a memorial tablet inside St Leonard's, Shoreditch and buried at West Norwood Cemetery.
