"Boomsday" is a political satire by Christopher Buckley. It is a comical novel about Social Security reform. In Boomsday, the rivalry between squandering Baby Boomers and younger generations of Americans who don't want to be paying rising taxes, and how this disagreement create one of the strangest Washington battles in American history. Leading the movement is Cassandra Devine, a blogger, Randolph Jepperson, a presidential candidate, and Terry Tucker, a public relations guru.

Title

Boomsday is referred in the book as the day that a majority of the Baby Boomers would begin retiring, thrusting the United States into economic trouble and the raising of taxes to compensate for Social Security.

Premise

Cassandra, who takes notice of the repercussions that the "Baby Boomers" could have on her generation, is appalled by the fact that no one seems to be addressing the issue, trying to find a solution. In her efforts to put an end to it she devises a plan: voluntary transitioning, where the "Baby Boomers" would commit suicide at sixty-five, but until then would receive all health benefits and support from the government. However, she never expected that when lobbying it people would take it seriously; after all it was only meant to get people to start talking about the issue, act as a catalyst. "But what happens when people do take it seriously?"
