KMOJ (89.9 FM) is a community radio station located in Minneapolis, Minnesota. They are a very community-oriented station airing a predominantly urban adult contemporary format. KMOJ also features soul music, blues, gospel music, reggae, jazz, hip hop, spoken word, and talk shows aimed at African American listeners. They are owned and operated by the non-profit Center for Communications and Development, located on Minneapolis' north side. KMOJ is a member of Minnesota's Independent Public Radio network. The station currently features several D.J.s including Walter "Q Bear" Banks Jr., Sonny Day, Sha Cage,E.G. Baily, Ray Richardson, Ras Bongo Jerie, Lady L, D.J. Cue, D.J. Divine, D.J. Dan Speak, Disco T, Crystle, Candice Grey, and Caddy "The Prince of Darkness." The station has long struggled with internal tension and lack of funds, among other things, since its inception in 1978. Recently, KMOJ was evicted from its longtime north side location, when the building was condemned and razed after severe structural damage was discovered.
