Grand Duchess Xenia Alexandrovna (1875-1960). His parents were first cousins once removed. Consequently Prince Rostislav was the great-grandson of Tsar Nicholas I (from his father's side), also the great-great-grandson of the same Tsar Nicholas I (from his mother's one), the grandson of Tsar Alexander III and the nephew of Tsar Nicholas II.When
Emperor Nicholas II abdicate d the Russian monarchy in March 1917, the Emperor's mother gathered a large number of relatives including Prince Rostislav in theCrimea . In 1918, many were detained at nearYalta , but a month later were freed by the Germans after the signing of theTreaty of Brest Litovsk . In 1919, a group including the Prince was rescued by the British battleship, HMS Marlborough, sent by King George V.
