Mayo College Girls' School is a public schools/boarding schools located in Ajmer, Rajasthan, India), providing education for girls from Class IV to XII. Students refer to themselves as Mayoites. The school was founded in 1987.

Overview

The academic period starts in April and ends in March. New students are admitted mainly in Class IV, V, VII and XI. The school is affiliated to the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE).

Mayo College Girls' School or MCGS follows the House System, with five dormitory-like houses, named, Sanyogita, Padmini, Meera, Karunawati and Charumati. These are named after princesses of Rajasthan. Additionally, there is holding house that houses students from Class IV and V. The house is supervised and maintained by House Mistresses and House Matrons.

After the final examinations, a midterm educational trip is organized which is mandatory for all students to attend. Students are taken to various parts of the country. Students also travel to different part of India and abroad to take part in competitions such as Indian Public School Conference (IPSC)[1] events and Round Square Conferences. There are student-exchange programmes with schools in the UK and Australia.

During the annual prize giving, the School Captain is announced. She is joined by her team of captains consisting of the School Vice Captain, Games Captain, House Captains, House Vice Captains, House Prefects and society Presidents. There is a Student Council that mediates between the student body and the teachers, while also suggesting ideas for the betterment of school. A few of the awards are school colors, academic and cultural scholarships, Best All Rounder award and sports trophies. A tally of points from competitions round the year and conduct of students is done at the end, and the Best House Trophy is awarded.

Festivals in school include Holi, Lohri, Id, Saraswati Puja, Basant Panchami and Diwali. On Gandhi Jayanti, the school helpers are given some time off and students engage in shram daan which spans from cleaning to cooking. Inter house Competitions are held in swimming, art and craft, music and dance, dramatics, computer science, cricket, hockey, badminton, tennis, horse riding, basketball.

In cricket, the girls have played for the Ranji trophy, representing Rajasthan.

Activities

The activities provided include dances (folk, Odissi, Kathak and Bharatnatyam), art, craft, Indian classical vocal music, Indian classical instruments (sitar, tabla, harmonium, violin), Western vocal and instrumental (piano, guitar, violin, drums, Congo), pottery, creative writing, dramatics, Nature Club, computer related activities, quizzing and debating.

The Dramatics Club is called The Sophocles Club, a name chosen by the XII Std batch of 2002-2003.

The student-run newsletter was initiated by the XII Std batch of 2004-2005. The first edition was called Kitch. The newsletter is now named Mayonnaise.

On Saturdays, a group of students go to an adopted village "Danta". An organization, Hateli was created to help the women in the area learn skills and sell their handicrafts.

Alumni of Mayo College are known as Old-Mayoites.
