List of compositions by Carl Nielsen

List of compositions by Carl Nielsen

The musical compositions by Carl Nielsen can be listed in terms of their genre, opus numbers and FS numbers that largely follow their chronological order.

The most famous compositions by the Danish composer are his six symphonies, putting up his fame as a symphonist. Most of his other works can hardly match the importance of the six symphonies. The best among them include the orchestral pieces "Pan and Syrinx" and "Saga-Drøm", the overtures "Helios" and "An Imaginary Trip to the Faroes", the incidental music for the plays "Aladdin" and "Moderen", the three concertos (especially the one for clarinet) and the mildly popular Wind Quintet.

Nielsen produced very few solo instrumental works comparing with other classical composers, with only pieces written for piano, violin and organ. His earliest works for piano are trifling. More significant works are found only after the composition of "Chaconne" for piano. His greatest piano work The Suite (Op. 45) came in 1920. Nielsen’s attention turned to organ at the end of his life. The best-known organ piece is "Commotio".

Nevertheless, the largest proportion taking up half of Nielsen’s musical works is the vocal works, which among them include songs for soloists and choir with or without accompaniment. His two opera "Saul og David" and "Maskarade" stand out in this genre, with other better-known songs including "Hymnus Amoris", "The Sleep" and "Springtime on Funen".
