Eberhard Kolb

Professor Eberhard Kolb (born 1933) is one of Germany's foremost authorities on German history in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

BIO

Eberhard Kolb had studied at the universities of Tübingen and Bonn, and attained a doctorate 1960 at the University of Goettingen over the topic of the worker advice in the German home policy.

He wrote his Habilitation 1969 and one year later became a professor at the University of Würzburg for modern history. Kolb has ever since then been a professor at the University of Cologne. In 1981 he spent a year as a visiting professor at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem.

Professor Kolb has published outstanding books on Imperial Germany, Weimar Germany, and the Third Reich, and his learned summary of research on The Weimar Republic is mandatory reading for all students of modern German history. Since its publication in 1984, it has been frequently revised and reissued, and was translated into English in 1988.

Historical Scientific Work

Belsen Mountain
The concentration camp at Belsen mountain takes a key role in Kolb's work. Already in the year 1959 he was participant of the first study trip of the national center of Lower Saxony for political education to Israel. In the year 1960 he compiles the first official Belsen mountain exhibition initiated by the country Lower Saxony. By this work published it inspires in 1962 a detailed Monographie over Belsen mountain. [1]

Weimar Republic
Heinrich August Winkler describes Cologne historians in an article, as one
"„the best connoisseurs of the history of the Weimar Republic “." [2]
Kolb wrote the book "the Weimar Republic." [4] , which lights up the problems and tendencies of the research beside a representation of the most important sections also.

Memorial Places
Kolb sits since 1998 continuously as a member in the scientific adviser of the petrol of Bismarck donation. In the donation it is active member, in addition it is member in the publisher committee of the “new Friedrichsruher expenditure” (edition of documents Otto von Bismarcks, its sons and coworkers). Since that time the moreover one it sat from 1990 to 2001 than adviser chairmen in the donation Reichspräsident Friedrich Ebert memorial place and is further member in the adviser. Beside the work over the KZ mountain Belsen engaged itself Kolb also for „the national reminding and memorial place beech forest “.

Honours

In the year 1992 the Distinguished Service Cross was lent to it to gang of the earnings/service medal of Lower Saxony. Besides it received to 11.02.2004 Distinguished Service Cross the 1. 'Class of the Federal Republic of Germany.' [3]
