Mark Sandilands

Mark Sandilands, PhD, (born 1943) has been acclaimed as the NDP's candidate for the Lethbridge federal riding in the 40th Canadian federal election.

Sandilands is the current second Vice President of the Alberta Section of the New Democratic Party (NDP), as well as the President of the Lethbridge Federal NDP Riding Association. He has also been President of Lethbridge West New Democratic Party Constituency Association since 1999 and has also served two terms as a General Vice President of the Alberta New Democratic Party. Sandilands ran as the NDP candidate for Lethbridge West in the 2001 and 2004 provincial elections, as well as in the 2001 election for Chinook Health Region Board.

He was born and raised in Edmonton, Alberta, and studied at the University of Alberta. In 1968, he joined the University of Lethbridge as an assistant professor, teaching psychology until his retirement in 2000. His research focused on aggression, environment-behaviour interactions, and public health.

Quoting his website, "Mark was president of the University of Lethbridge Faculty Association (1985-86), and was also active provincially with the Confederation of Alberta Faculty Associations, including a two-year term as president (1986-8), and nationally with the Canadian Association of University Teachers. Mark has been a volunteer in many community organizations, for example, Lethbridge Family Services (President, 1976-7), Society for the Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect (President 1982-5). He is now a member of the Lethbridge Domestic Violence Action Team, vice president of Masters Swimming Canada, and secretary treasurer of the Environmental Psychology Section of the Canadian Psychological Association."
