Suffolk County Road 85 was transferred to Montauk Highway from the Smithtown Bypass in 1966, when that road was acquired by the New York State Department of Transportation and designated New York State Route 347. The designation was shared with NY 27A until that designation was eliminated in 1972.

This section of Montauk Highway runs through the hamlets of Oakdale, West Sayville, Sayville, Bayport, and Blue Point.

East of Suffolk County Road 19, West Main Street continues as a street maintained by the Village of Patchogue. It won't gain another county designation until the name changes to East Main Street, and crosses over the Village line, where it is designated as Suffolk County Road 80.
