- USS Pentheus (ARL-20)
The USS "Pentheus" (ARL-20) was one of 39 "Achelous"-class
landing craft repair ships built for theUnited States Navy duringWorld War II . Named forPentheus (a king of Thebes, according to Greek legend), she was the only U.S. Naval vessel to bear the name.Originally laid down as "LST–1115" by the Chicago Bridge and Iron Company of
Seneca, Illinois 29 September 1944 ; launched22 December 1944 ; and placed in reduced commission4 January 1945 . Proceeding toBaltimore, Maryland , she decommissioned6 February 1945 ; underwent conversion; and was commissioned in full as USS "Pentheus" (ARL–20)7 June 1945 with Lieutenant Mason E. Brock, USNR, in command. Following shakedown inChesapeake Bay , "Pentheus" took on pontoons atProvidence, Rhode Island , and on15 July got underway for theCanal Zone . Crossing into thePacific 26 July , she steamed on toSubic Bay ,Philippines . Arriving17 October , she engaged in repair work there until sailing forPearl Harbor 5 January 1946 . From Pearl Harbor, she steamed toJohnston Island for 2 weeks duty prior to getting underway forGreen Cove Springs, Florida and inactivation. Arriving20 April she decommissioned and joined the Atlantic Reserve Fleet, where she remained until struck from theNaval Vessel Register 1 January 1960 . She was sold on13 June 1960 to Ships, Inc. ofFlorida . Her final fate is unknown.References
