- Raquette River
The Raquette River, sometimes spelled Racquette, originates at
Raquette Lake in theAdirondack Mountains inNew York . It is the second longest river in the state of New York behind theHudson River .The river passes through many natural and man made lakes to its final destination at
Akwesasne on theSaint Lawrence River . Unusually for an American river of its size, the Raquette flows north. The river is a popular destination for canoeing and kayaking. It is also the source of 27 hydroelectric plants operated by Brookfield Power, which at capacity can produce up to 181
megawatts of power. [ [http://www.brookfieldpower.com/PowerOperations/pdf/St%20Lawrence_March_2007.pdf Brookfield Power St. Lawrence Region Operations] ]Historically, the river was a part of the "Highway of the Adirondacks", by which it was possible to travel hundreds of miles by
canoe orguideboat with short stretches ofportage connecting various waterways. This route is still followed by theNorthern Forest Canoe Trail , a convert|740|mi|km|sing=on canoe trail from Old Forge to Fort Kent inMaine . It is also the basis of the route of theAdirondack Canoe Classic , a three-day, 90-mile canoe race from Old Forge to Saranac Lake.Communities along the Raquette River (South to North) [ [http://www.raquetteriver.com/ Raquette River Corridor Project] ]
