WKHJ-FM is an radio station with an Adult Contemporary format licensed to Mountain Lake Park, Maryland, near Oakland.

History

WKHJ was granted it's construction permit from the Federal Communications Commission on November 23rd, 1988 to build a station that would broadcast on 98.9FM. The station signed on the air on July 9, 1990. Originally located on the dial at 98.9, where the station was known as "99-KHJ". WKHJ moved up the dial to 104.5 in April, 1998, after a ruling by the FCC that it had to accommodate a frequency move and power increase by WDNE-FM, Elkins, WV. Eventually, WPQR (now WPKL), Uniontown, PA, was also able to upgrade in power due to the move.

WKHJ serves Garrett County, Maryland and eastern Preston County, West Virginia. Studios are on Lothian Street in Loch Lynn Heights near Oakland. WKHJ is owned by Southern Highlands, Incorporated, and is operated from the same facility as sister stations WMSG and WWHC.

The initial stockholders of Southern Highlands, Incorporated, included Roger Ruff, who also served as chief operator, and Albert and Jeanne Devine. Albert Devine died in November, 2004, while Roger Ruff died suddenly in May, 2005.

Terry King has been operations manager of WKHJ since its inception. Jim Shaffer has served as news director from nearly the beginning. Bob Mohr is the afternoon host. Pam Trickett is the sales and marketing director, while Lisa Skipper is an account executive. Paul Mullan serves as chief operator.
