Birchall (surname)

Birchall (surname)

Birchall is an English surname deriving from the settlement of Biekel, Lancashire. The name 'Birchill' meaning Birch trees on a hill. Therefore it can be assumed 'Birchall' means a dweller by birch trees on a hill. The village of Biekel later became 'Birtle'.

It is most commonly found in the North-West of England, particularly Lancashire. The highest proportion of bearers can be found in Wigan, Lancashire. The first recorded bearer was John de Birchall de Birtles in 1401.

The surname is less commonly found in other areas of the former British Empire, including Canada and the United States. There was only one migrant to Australia a convicted criminal, James Stanley Birchall,a Protestant who came from Chorley in Lancashire. On 10 April, 1851 he was sent to Norfolk Island for committing forgery.

Coventry City F.C. footballer Christopher Birchall is probably the most famous bearer in the popular press, with author Ian Birchall also well-known in some circles. Air Commodore Leonard Birchall of Canada received numerous decorations for his service in the Second World War.

In Ireland, Birchalls Pub in Ranelagh village in Dublin is a popular bar for locals.

Birchalls.ie sells gift baskets on the buy4now.ie network. Birchalls.ie also works in unison with its sister website www.gifts.ie, which is one of Ireland's leading gift websites. Both sites are run by Anthony, John and Joseph Birchall.
