Bangalla

Bangalla

Bangalla, also known as Bengali and Bangolia, is a fictional African country (originally set in Asia, near India, until the 1960s) that features in the world famous Lee Falk created comic series The Phantom. Bangalla is the home of the Phantom, who resides in the Deep Woods of the jungle in the fabled Skull Cave.

Geography

Bangalla is located in Africa, and has to its north Tanzania, to its south Mozambique and to the west Malawi. The population of Bangalla is 50,000,000 as of 2000. The capital of Bangalla is Mawitann which has a population of 5,000,000, and is one of the most prosperous cities in that region. The per capita income of Bangalla is 22,000 bangallan dollars (about 15,000 U.S. dollars). Bangalla could best be described as a combination of an African and Indian country; the country was portrayed as being in Asia, near India until the 1960s.

The Bangallan flag is blue with a yellow crescent to the left, and a star and a circle to the right.

Regime

Bangalla is a former British colony, but is today a democracy. The country's first president is named Lamanda Luaga. Luaga is a retired general in the Bangallan National Army, before he led a rebellion against the evil King Kabakaluki II, who ruled the country as a dictatorial monarch for about 10 years before Luaga overthrew him and setup a republic. Luaga was initially replaced by the evil Kigali Lubanga, who ruled the country as a dictator for a short period, before the people started a rebellion and Luaga was re-elected. (Lubanga has since shown up on several occasions to haunt the Phantom and tried to take power, also general Jebral Bababu and Mawitaan mayor George Gorga has made several unsuccessful coup d'états).

Neighbouring countries

Bangala is also near Ivory Lana (also called "Fari Lana"), whose president Abraham Goranda is a friend of Luaga, and Rodia (also written "Rhodia").

Laws and Constitution

The Constitution of Bangalla is much like the United States Constitution

"The Executive Branch"

The executive branch of the constitution mandates a "President of the Republic of Bangalla", a "Vice President" and a "Cabinet of Ministers". The president & vice president are elected for a 5 year term. the last presidential election was held in 2005.

"The Legislative Branch"

The legislative branch is made up of a "Senate" and a "House of Representatives". The members of the senate are elected for 6 year terms, and are chosen from each of Bangalla's 33 provinces 3 from each province. The members of the house of representatives are elected for 2 year terms, there are at present 400 members in the house.

"The Judiciary Branch"

The judiciary branch is made up of a "Supreme Court" and lesser courts. the supreme court consists of a 9 justices.

Recent events have established that the president, should he deem it necessary, has the power to suspend the laws. President Luaga, for instance, suspended the rules against striking or assaulting the president, in an effort to have a fair fistfight with a citizen. Such an exhibition of power suggests that the legislature of Bangalla is weaker than in many commonwealth countries.
