The first HMAS "Warramunga" (D10/I44) was a Tribal class destroyer, laid down by the Cockatoo Docks and Engineering Company Limited at Sydney on the 10th February 1940, launched on 7 February 1942 by Mrs. F. M. Forde, wife of the Minister for the
Army , and commissioned on 23 November in 1942."Warramunga" was assigned to convoy escort duty between
Queensland andNew Guinea . She participated in multiple South-West Pacific landings during World War II, and was present inTokyo Bay onVictory over Japan Day (2 September 1945), when theJapanese Instrument of Surrender was signed.
