Pediatric pulmonology

A pediatric pulmonologist is a medical doctor that treats respiratory problems in children as well as adolescents. These doctors are trained in both pediatrics and the subspecialty of pulmonology.

Training

Pediatric pulmonology is a subspecialty studied in an accredited fellowship program. The requirements to become a Pediatric Pulmonologist generally include:

* A medical degree
* 3 years of residency training in pediatrics
* 3 years of fellowship training in pediatric pulmonology
* Certification from the American Board of Pediatrics from both the specialty of pediatrics and the subspecialty of pediatric pulmonology

Types of Problems Treated

Most of the cases that pediatric pulmonologists encounter have to do with asthma, chronic cough, difficulty breathing and chronic lung diseases in premature infants. Not all of the problems that they encounter are possible to cure.
