Poukai

Poukai

In Māori mythology, Pouakai or Poukai is a monstrous bird that ate people.

The Poukai, however, may not have been entirely mythological. When the Māori first arrived in New Zealand it is believed that Haast's Eagle, a raptor which is now extinct, was still in existence. This giant bird of prey is believed to have hunted Moa weighing up to 300 pounds. Such a creature could have very well killed and eaten humans.
