This is a list of Nevada county name etymologies.
*Carson City, Nevada: Carson City is named for Christopher Houston (Kit) Carson, the famous frontier scout and soldier.
*Churchill County, Nevada: Churchill is named for Fort Churchill, named in turn for Sylvester Churchill, a general in the Mexican-American War.
*Clark County, Nevada: Clark is named for William Andrews Clark, a builder of a railroad through the county.
*Douglas County, Nevada: Douglas is named for Stephen Arnold Douglas, the U. S. statesman and presidential rival of Abraham Lincoln.
*Elko County, Nevada: Elko is named for the county seat of Elko, Nevada, named in turn for the herds of elk in the area.
*Esmeralda County, Nevada: Esmeralda is named for the Esmeralda Mining District, named in turn for possibly the character Esmeralda of "The Hunchback of Notre Dame".
*Eureka County, Nevada: Eureka is named for the Greek expression "Eureka", meaning "I have found it!", in reference to deposits of silver found in the vicinity.
*Humboldt County, Nevada: Humboldt is named for the Humboldt River, named in turn for Friedrich Heinrich Alexander von Humboldt, the famous German scientist, explorer and statesman.
*Lander County, Nevada: Lander is named for Frederick W. Lander, an American Civil War general and developer of the area.
*Lincoln County, Nevada: Lincoln is named for Abraham Lincoln, the sixteenth president of the United States.
*Lyon County, Nevada: Lyon is named for Nathaniel Lyon, an Iowan soldier who was the first United States general killed in the American Civil War.
*Mineral County, Nevada: Mineral is named for the minerals of the surrounding area.
*Nye County, Nevada: Nye is named for James Warren Nye, a governor of the Nevada Territory and U.S. senator from Nevada.
*Pershing County, Nevada: Pershing is named for John Joseph (Black Jack) Pershing, the World War I general and one of the two highest ranked U.S. soldiers in history.
*Storey County, Nevada: Storey is named for Edward Farris Storey, a captain killed at Pyramid Lake in the 1860 Paiute War with Native Americans.
*Washoe County, Nevada: Washoe is named for the Washoe Native American tribe.
