John Henry Denig (September 8, 1838–December 10, 1876) was a Marine Corps sergeant serving with the Marine Detachment aboard the USS "Brooklyn" during the American Civil War. He was awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions in 1864 during the Battle of Mobile Bay.

Denig was born in York, Pennsylvania. He died at the age of 38 and is buried in York's Prospect Hill Cemetery.

Medal of Honor citation

On December 31, 1864, by Navy Department General Order Number 45, Sergeant J. Henry Denig was awarded the Medal of Honor. His citation reads::

:On board the USS "Brooklyn" during action against rebel forts and gunboats and with the ram "Tennessee", Mobile Bay, August 5, 1864. Despite severe damage to his ship and the loss of several men on board as enemy fire raked her decks, Sergeant Denig fought his gun with skill and courage throughout the furious 2-hour battle which resulted in the surrender of the rebel ram "Tennessee" and in the damaging and destruction of batteries at Fort Morgan.
