Selianitika ( _el. "Σελιανίτικα"), is a Greek coastal village located in northern Peloponnese 187 km west of Athens and nearly 30 km east of Patras. Selianitika and its adjacent village Longos share a beautiful beach which is approximately 1.5 Km long. Both villages are among the most popular destinations of Achaia during the summer months. The village had a population of 1,147 in 2001 and it is in the municipality of Sympoliteia.

Geography and climate

The village lies on the Gulf of Corinth in a nice setting surrounded by olive trees, citrus (orange and lemon) trees and vineyards. The closest city is Egion 7 km east of Selianitika while the city of Patras (third largest city of Greece and administrative center of Achaea) is only 30-35 Km far. The main village is built on an elevated land area about 30m of the sea level. It has a large beach of fine gravel (typical beach of Gulf of Corinth) which is shared with the adjacent village, Longos and it is famous for its clean and blue water. Its panorama includes the mountains to the south Klokos, the Panachaiko to the southwest and the mountains of Phokida to the north, past the Gulf of Corinth. The climatic conditions of the region are very nice , Mediterranean like with mild winters and not excessively hot summers.

Population

History

The name Selianitika has a direct relationship with the name of the village of Seliana-Phelloe. According to A. Fotopoulos the descent of inhabitants of Seliana from the mountains to the coastal region of "Kryovrysi" near Aigion (where the village of Selianitika lies today) started to happen during the ottoman period. Initially the residents of Seliana were spending the winter in Selianitika and the summer in their metropolitan village of Seliana but later they settled permanently. The residents of Seliana carried with them the parish of Saint Basil (the oldest of Seliana's churches) and today Saint Basil is the patron saint of the village of Selianitika.

Transportation

Apart from the old national road ( _el. Παλαιά Εθνική Οδός) GR-8 that connects the village with Aigio, Patras and the neighboring villages, Selianitika is also linked with the so called in Greece "New National Road" ( _el. Νέα Εθνική Οδός) (GR-8A, Athens - Corinth - Patras). In the new highway Elefsina-Corinth-Patras-Pyrgos-Tsakona (upgrade of GR-8A to motorway standards) Selianitika/Longos will have its own interchange. Tourism

Selianitika is a summer resort for many Greek people, especially originating from Athens or Patras. There are hotels, pensions and many taverns serving dishes of Greek cuisine located along the beach promenade. Selianitika is preferred for a tranquil walk, a tasteful dinner during the evening or an early breakfast as a cure for past night's hangover. Seeking for summer nightlife, one can go to Longos (10 min walk by the beach) or Rododafni's beach, Akoli (less than 5 min by car).

Selianitika has also mineral springs [ [http://www.visitgreece.gr/pages.php?pageID=425&langID=2 List of Local mineral springs of Greece] ("Greek Ministry of Tourism") ] and a very small balneological bath spa. These sulphurous baths [ [http://nemertes.lis.upatras.gr/dspace/bitstream/123456789/597/1/%ce%a5%ce%94%ce%a1%ce%9f%ce%93%ce%95%ce%a9%ce%9b%ce%9f%ce%93%ce%99%ce%9a%ce%97%20%ce%9a%ce%91%ce%99%20%ce%a5%ce%94%ce%a1%ce%9f%ce%a7%ce%97%ce%9c%ce%99%ce%9a%ce%97%20%ce%9c%ce%95%ce%9b%ce%95%ce%a4%ce%97%20%ce%a4%ce%a9%ce%9d%20%ce%98%ce%95%ce%a1%ce%9c%ce%9f%ce%9c%ce%95%ce%a4%ce%91%ce%9b%ce%9b%ce%99%ce%9a%ce%a9%ce%9d%20%ce%a0%ce%97%ce%93%ce%a9%ce%9d%20%ce%a4%ce%97%ce%a3%20%ce%94%ce%a5%ce%a4%ce%99%ce%9a%ce%97%ce%a3%20%ce%a0%ce%95%ce%9b%ce%9f%ce%a0%ce%9f%ce%9d%ce%9d%ce%97%ce%a3%ce%9f%ce%a5%20%ce%9c%ce%95%20%ce%a4%ce%97%20%ce%a7%ce%a1%ce%97%ce%a3%ce%97%20%ce%a3%ce%a4%ce%91%ce%98%ce%95%ce%a1%ce%a9%ce%9d%20%ce%99%ce%a3%ce%9f%ce%a4%ce%9f%ce%a0%ce%a9%ce%9d.pdf Thermal Mineral waters of Western Greece , page 36] ("Stratikopoulos Konstantinos - Master Thesis - Department of Geology - University of Patras - 2007" (in Greek))] are ideal for diseases like arthritis and rheumatisms.
