Who's Who in American Art

Who’s Who in American Art is a biographical directory of important individuals in the visual arts community in the United States.. It is published by Marquis Who's Who, publisher of Who’s Who in America since 1899 and a subsidiary of News Communications, Inc., which also owns The Hill and National Register Publishing, publisher of the American Art Directory and the Official Museum Directory.

For well over 100 years, Who's Who in America has been providing accurate, concise, biographies of notable Americans. Founder, Albert Nelson Marquis, selected 8,602 distinguished people for the First Edition of Who's Who which was published in 1899. Since that time, Marquis has expanded their publication to include this - the Who's Who in American Art, which contains over 11,000 biographies of artists, critics, curators, historians, collectors, educators, and dealers - everyone who’s anyone in the visual arts in the United States.

Today, the Marquis Who's Who family of directories has grown to include the biographies of millions of leaders and achievers from around the world, and from every significant field of endeavor. It is a respected source for finding important, recognized, and highly successful individuals in important fields from around the world. Only those people who have made a significant difference in their field are recognized and listed in the Who's Who publications, which has made it a regarded source of biographies and information about those esteemed individuals from around the world.

Who’s Who in American Art provides over 11,000 biographies of artists, critics, curators, administrators, librarians, historians, collectors, educators, dealers, and conservators (9,000 are artists). Listings in the directory contain entrants’ dates and places of birth; education and training; commissions and exhibitions; museums holding their work; professional positions; awards; books and articles by and about them; the media in which they work; their dealers and representatives; and their mailing addresses.

Entrants are listed alphabetically by name, and again in a separate Geographical Index. A Professional Classifications Index identifies all entrants in more than 50 categories such as Administrator, Mosaic Artist, and Writer. A Necrology Index lists all previous entrants who have died between 1953 and 2007.

In 2008, Marquis Who’s Who added the ARTISTS’ GALLERY to the Who’s Who in American Art publication, creating a venue for artists profiled in its pages to exhibit some of their work. The full-color ARTISTS’ GALLERY houses visual art from across various media and styles, including drawing, painting, photography, and sculpture. Only artists whose biographies are selected for inclusion are invited to show their work in this collection. The ARTISTS’ GALLERY appears in print and can be viewed online at www.whoswhogallery.com.

Who’s Who in American Art became searchable online beginning in 2007, as additional content included with Marquis Who’s Who on the Web. It contains over 14,000 biographies of noteworthy men and women in today's art world as well as notable artists from the past.

The Who’s Who in American Art online database can be used to quickly locate artists, critics, curators, dealers, and anyone who is anyone in the visual arts in North America. The database is searchable by the following criteria: name, profession, media, gender, birth information and keyword. Biographies are displayed with subject headings that include classification, media, birth information, education, exhibitions, business and professional positions, honors and awards, amongst others.

History

The first edition of the publication was published by the American Federation of Arts in 1940 under the title “A Biographical Dictionary of Contemporary American Artists.” It contained a Preface, Abbreviations, Biographies, Obituaries, and a Classified Geographical Index. Who’s Who in American Art was published for many years by R.R. Bowker Co. up to and including the 20th edition and has been published by Marquis Who’s Who beginning with the 21st edition.
