The American Art Therapy Association (AATA) is the official United States organization for art therapists. They are a non-profit organization based in Alexandria, VA.
Their website enables those interested in art therapy to learn about current issues, subscribe to their magazines, and acquire links to medical journal and research sites.
The AATA was founded in 1969. The mission statement of the organization is that it is 'an organization of professionals dedicated to the belief that the creative process involved in art making is healing and life enhancing'. The organization is run by an 11 member Board of Directors, who are elected by the general membership. There are also more than 30 AATA Regional Chapters who hold meetings and activities promoting art therapy on the local level. The organization represents approximately 4500 members nationwide.
